Prabha Khaitan Foundation presented Phagun Ke Rang, a magnificent evening celebrating the vibrant colours of spring and the joyous spirit of Holi, at Kalamandir, Kolkata. The event brought together music lovers, cultural enthusiasts, and admirers of Indian folk traditions for an unforgettable evening steeped in melody, heritage, and festivity.
The evening featured an enthralling performance by Padma Shri Malini Awasthi, accompanied by her accomplished ensemble of musicians. Widely regarded as one of India’s foremost voices in folk and semi-classical music, Malini Awasthi is celebrated for her mastery over Awadhi, Bhojpuri, and Bundelkhandi folk traditions. A recipient of both the Padma Shri and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, she is known for her expertise in Purab Ang gayaki, thumri, Dadra, and Kajri.
The programme commenced with opening remarks by Sharmistha Goswami Chatterjee, followed by a warm introductory address by Shefali Rawat Agarwal, Ehsaas Woman of Kolkata, who welcomed the gathering on behalf of Prabha Khaitan Foundation. Guest artist Malini Awasthi was felicitated by Esha Dutta, Ehsaas Woman of Kolkata, in recognition of her extraordinary contribution to Indian music and culture.
As the performance unfolded, the atmosphere at Kalamandir transformed into a soul-stirring musical journey. Malini Awasthi began the evening with some of her most renowned and beloved compositions, captivating the audience with her powerful voice, emotive expression, and effortless command over folk and classical traditions. Renditions of songs such as Rang Daarungi, Holi Khele Masaane Mein, Rasiya Ko Naar Banavo Ri, Amma Mere Baba Ko Bhejo Ri, and Holi Khelen Raghuveera Awadh Ma, among others, filled the auditorium with festive fervour and nostalgia. Her performance beautifully reflected the richness and diversity of Indian musical heritage, transporting listeners through melodies rooted in culture, celebration, and emotion.
Adding a special warmth to the evening, the artist later engaged with the audience by performing songs requested by them, creating an intimate and interactive experience that further deepened the connection between the performer and the listeners. The audience responded with immense enthusiasm, applause, and admiration throughout the evening.
In her special byte, Malini Awasthi reflected upon her beautiful and longstanding association with Prabha Khaitan Foundation.
